Accessible collections
Libraries are for everyone. Yukon Public Libraries provide free accessible services to Yukon residents with visual, hearing, mobility, and learning disabilities that prevents them from reading conventional print.
The following equipment is available at Whitehorse Public Library. Please contact us if you are in a Yukon Community and in need of assistive equipment to access library programs and services.
- DAISY players
- Folding book stands
- MP3 players
- Hand-held magnifying glasses
- Portable hearing loops
- Light therapy lamps (in-house use only)
- iPads with accessibility apps (in-house use only)
- Noise-canceling headphones (in-house use only)
- C-Pen
- Desktop video magnifier with text-to-speech technology (in-house use only)
- In-house assistive computer stations with:
- Height-adjustable table
- Large print keyboard
- Large touchscreen monitor
- BIGTrack Trackball mouse
- Portable CD/DVD player
- Windows 10 with Ease of Access options for improved accessibility
- Internet
- Leather-padded office chair with armrest
Most of the equipment was purchased through the Enabling Accessibility Fund grant from the Government of Canada.
- Center for Equitable Library Access(CELA). This includes more than 500,000 titles including best sellers, popular magazines in English and French. You can also access 700,000 books from Bookshare.
- National Network for Equitable Library Services (NNELS). This includes 35,000 titles in English, French, Indigenous and International languages.
- OverDrive This includes over 5,000 eBooks and audiobooks.
- Online databases include collections of Canadian magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books. There are also readers' advisory and book club discussion guides. Learn some tips on navigating these databases.
Contact CELA and NNELS to request titles that are not available in alternative formats.
- Search the library catalogue for audiobooks, braille books, DVDs, DAISY books and large print books.
- DAISY CDs, braille books and magazines can be ordered through CELA.
- We are a location for the NNELS library of physical items such as braille books. Any item in the NNELS catalogue can be sent to the Yukon.
Borrowers can request for extended loan period, unless the item is in high demand. If we do not have an item, contact your local library to borrow it from another library.
CELA can send DAISY CDs, braille books and magazines to your mailbox. YPL staff can also work with social workers and care home staff to send curated materials to individuals or institutions. Ask us for more information.
